About the place
Passer-by:
– How can one depict the past, which no longer exists? Like in a fairy tale – come neither dressed nor naked. Come as the past, but in the form of the present.
Sculpture:
– Do not laugh, passer-by. Look at me more closely. Can you see the imprint of a warrior’s figure on a stone boat-shaped axe? Please do not frown – it takes so little effort, only your attentive gaze, to perceive sculptor Romanas Kazlauskas’s idea. The sculptor saw my form in a museum where ancient tools are displayed. There was almost nothing to invent: he simply enlarged the axe form until it became a figure larger than a person. And that hole at the bottom – do you see it? That is where the axe handle would have been fitted. Surprised? An artist’s imagination is powerful; it knows how to transform forms.
Passer-by:
– I can see now that you are a boat-shaped axe, but a warrior too! Either I do not understand art, or a genius carved you.
Sculpture:
– Do not rush to conclusions. Look closely: can you see the warrior’s figure? In his right hand he holds a sword, while with his left he leans on a shield.
Passer-by:
– Once you said it, I can see it too, but I would never have noticed on my own how many interesting things “The Past” conceals.
