Between 1904 and 1907, barracks were built here \u2013 six Neo-Gothic buildings of red clinker brick, complete with a chapel, dining halls and weapons stores. For almost half a century they served the military; today they serve science and education.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>The university was founded on 1 January 1991 by merging branches of institutes from Kaunas and \u0160iauliai. Today it includes three faculties, several institutes, a library, a publishing house, a Botanical Garden and a Career Centre.
