It was from the balcony of this theatre that Hitler announced the annexation of Memel. The theatre is also considered one of the oldest theatre buildings in Lithuania, having stood on this site in one form or another for almost two centuries. Over the years it has been built, burned down, risen from the ashes, privatised, restored and reconstructed before acquiring its present appearance. Today it is one of the most modern theatres in the Baltic region. Following the reconstruction completed in 2015, the lower levels were equipped with modern hydraulic systems as well as advanced sound and lighting technology. The automatically controlled stage can move together with the stalls.
