Giruliai seems almost made for family holidays. This small settlement in northern Klaipėda welcomes visitors with the sound of the sea and lush green forests. Nature here is especially beautiful and generous – a botanical-zoological reserve has been established in the area.
As far back as the 19th century, sandy dunes stretched across this place, and the Prussian authorities decided to plant them with pine trees. Later, merchants were allowed to establish bathing facilities and local residents to rent out summer houses. Today it is one of Klaipėda’s most popular beaches, especially among families with children. Giruliai can be reached by bicycle, bus or even train – in only about 7 minutes from the city centre. A paved path leads across the dunes to the beach, while the beach itself is spacious and welcoming to everyone: there are cafés, a lifeguard station, changing cabins and a wooden viewing platform where evenings are perfect for watching spectacular sunsets.
If you are looking for even more impressions, continue to the striking Dutchman’s Cap cliff, explore the remains of the “Memel-Nord” battery, or visit the unique old cemetery of Karklė village near the coast.
Anyone who has spent a summer in Giruliai knows that it is more than just a beach. It is a place where every day begins with the song of the sea and ends with toys forgotten in the sand and some of the most precious memories in your collection of experiences.
