Klaipėda Drama Theatre

About the activity

This famous neoclassical theatre was built in 1857, and at least three of its facades still stand today. It was from the balcony of this very theatre that Hitler announced the Anschluss of Memel. The theatre is also considered the oldest theatre building in Lithuania, having stood on this site for almost two hundred years. Over the centuries it has been through a lot: it was built, burned down, rose again from the ashes, was privatised, restored and reconstructed until it finally took on its current appearance. Today the theatre is one of the most modern in the Baltic region. After the reconstruction completed in 2015, modern hydraulic equipment and outstanding sound and lighting systems were installed in the lower premises of the theatre. The automatically controlled stage can move together with the stalls. It is a great venue not only for seeing performances by Lithuanian artists but also for learning about the theatre’s remarkable history: the building houses a theatre museum that recalls the past of this cultural institution.
