The Botanical Garden was established on the lands of the Great Tauralaukis Manor, so the manor’s small cemetery has survived here, where its owner, the nobleman Ewald von Mirbach, one of the founders of the Klaipėda Masonic lodge “Memphis”, is buried. His grave is marked by a stone stele with an inscription. Another notable heritage site in the Botanical Garden is a fragment of a historic road. Many long-lived oaks, maples and ash trees have survived in the garden to this day, recalling the history of Prussia and even the famous walks of Queen Louise. It is said that while residing in Memel, the queen would come to Tauralaukis by carriage or by boat with her children and loved to hold picnics in the shelter of the oaks. Today such royal pleasures are available to everyone at the Botanical Garden: the renewed garden has illuminated educational trails accessible to people with reduced mobility, a smart plant labelling system, interactive information boards, stylish gazebos and cosy relaxation areas for those seeking peace and aesthetic nourishment. In this garden, full of life and beauty, in the shade of historic trees, unforgettable dates are arranged, before Christmas people hurry to choose the most beautiful Christmas trees, and devoted nature lovers add to their collections by buying plants from the garden. By the way, did you know that on 18 May the world celebrates Fascination of Plants Day? It is a great opportunity to visit the Klaipėda University Botanical Garden!
