About the place
Passer-by:
– You look strange, centaur: a huge red head and a small grey body. The sculptor must have wanted to carve you as very intelligent – as Buddhists might say, an enlightened centaur.
Sculpture:
– This is my second head. The first was stolen a month after I was installed. It was different: a graceful little head mounted on a metal rod. But late one evening a thief came, cut through the rod and carried my head away.
Passer-by:
– And how did the new head appear on your shoulders? Surely it did not grow back by itself like the head of a nine-headed dragon?
Sculpture:
– I stood headless for a long time. Little birds liked to land on my neck and tell me their troubles, but since I had no ears, eyes or mouth, I could not answer them. After thirty years, sculptor Algirdas Bosas gave me a new head. You see how red it is. That was the only stone he could find – a leftover from the sculpture “Reclining Woman” – so that is what he carved. In colour, the head is one thing and the body another. But it is beautiful, isn’t it?
Passer-by:
– How shall I put it… there is no arguing about taste.
