About the place
Passer-by:
– I walk around you, Earth, and try to understand what you depict. The lowered hand points downward. The bowed head expresses respect for those resting in the earth. Sculptor Stanislovas Kuzma knew where his sculpture would stand. Although no one said aloud that sculptures would stand on the site of a cemetery, the silence was eloquent. Silence was more valuable than speech. By keeping silent, people expressed resistance to the system of the time.
Sculpture:
– Sculptor Stanislovas Kuzma was one of the quiet modernists, unwilling to adapt to the Soviet system, and for that reason he was persecuted and broken throughout his life.
Passer-by:
– When your bronze parts – your face and hands – were stolen, you seemed even quieter.
Sculpture:
– You noticed that unpleasant event? I really did remain without a face and hands for a long time. A mute granite form. Only a few years ago I was restored by sculptor Stanislovas Kuzma’s son, also a sculptor – Algirdas Kuzma. Thanks to him, I am now as I was in the beginning. Only my face and hands were recreated not from solid bronze, but from bronze dust and resin.
Passer-by:>br>
– Bronze dust sounds almost poetic. Like stardust. And the folds of your garment are like slices of native earth. I come to the park because of you. I wanted you to know how dear you are to me.
