About the place
Memorial plaques with symbolic footprints are set into the pavement of Klaipėda Old Town – quiet signs of respect commemorating the stories of prominent citizens.
The first footprint appeared in 1998 beside the former headquarters of the Sąjūdis movement (Vežėjų St. 4). It is dedicated to Rimantas Ulevičius, a history teacher, one of the founders of Sąjūdis in Klaipėda and a deputy mayor, who died tragically. The idea for these memorial markers was proposed by artist Vytautas Karčiauskas, while a support foundation was established by R. Ulevičius’s father, folk artist Vytautas Ulevičius.
The second footprint is located near Klaipėda Theatre Square, at the beginning of Turgaus Street. It is dedicated to architect Vytautas Šliogeris, whose final project was the reconstruction of this very street.
The third, beside the city municipality on Liepų Street, honours Alfonsas Žalys – founder of the Lithuanian Sea Museum, a signatory of the Act of the Re-Establishment of Independence, an honorary citizen of Klaipėda and a recipient of the Order of Gediminas.
These people left a deep mark on the city’s development and spirit, and their ideas and work continue to inspire Klaipėda residents every day.
