About the place
Memorial plaques featuring symbolic footprints are embedded in the paving of Klaipėda Old Town – quiet signs of respect that preserve the stories of prominent city residents.
The first footprint appeared in 1998 near the former headquarters of the Sąjūdis movement (Vežėjų St. 4). It is dedicated to Rimantas Ulevičius, a history teacher, one of the initiators of Sąjūdis in Klaipėda and a former deputy mayor, who died tragically. The idea of creating such memorials was proposed by artist Vytautas Karčiauskas, while a support foundation was established by R. Ulevičius’s father, folk artist Vytautas Ulevičius.
The second footprint is located near Klaipėda Theatre Square, at the beginning of Turgaus Street. It is dedicated to architect Vytautas Šliogeris, whose final project was the reconstruction of this very street.
The third footprint, near the city municipality building on Liepų Street, honours Alfonsas Žalys – founder of the Lithuanian Sea Museum, signatory of the Act of Independence, honorary citizen of Klaipėda and recipient of the Order of Gediminas.
These people left a lasting mark on the development and spirit of the city, and their ideas and work continue to inspire the people of Klaipėda every day.
