About the place
Klaipėda’s system of bastion fortifications began to take shape in 1627–1629 under the supervision of engineer K. Rose (Ch. Rose). The city was encircled by Dutch-style ramparts, bastions and moats – one of the most complex 17th-century military structures in Lithuania. Klaipėda could be entered only through the Bridge, Kūliai and Mill gates. The bastions also recall the name of Alexander Suvorov, who served here as commandant during the Seven Years’ War.
The complex consists of three areas, the most prominent being Jono Kalnelis with the Galdern and Purmark bastions, the old moat and a surviving ravelin. Today, the restored area offers walking paths, landscaped ramparts, modern lighting, a children’s playground and dancing fountains.
In the evening, the place shines in new colours – dancing fountains accompanied by music and lights turn the former fortress into a dreamlike urban entertainment stage. The sturdy defensive walls have become a space where history blends with the modern rhythm of life and offers a distinctive leisure experience.
The fountain operates Monday–Thursday at 12:00, 12:30, 13:00, 13:30, 14:00, 14:30, 15:00, 15:30, 16:00, 16:30, 17:00, 17:30, 18:00, 18:30, 19:00, 19:30, 20:00, 20:30, 21:00, 21:30 and 22:00, with musical performances on Friday–Sunday at 12:00, 15:00 and 19:00.
