About the place
Klaipėda University is the youngest university in Lithuania, yet its main campus complex reaches much further back in history. Between 1904 and 1907, barracks were built here – six Neo-Gothic buildings of red clinker brick, complete with a chapel, dining halls and weapons stores. For almost half a century they served the military; today they serve science and education.
The university was founded on 1 January 1991 by merging branches of institutes from Kaunas and Šiauliai. Today it includes three faculties, several institutes, a library, a publishing house, a Botanical Garden and a Career Centre. Located by the sea, the university is a vibrant harbour of knowledge where history and education meet in one space.
A place once defined by discipline and uniformed routine now lives to a very different rhythm – knowledge grows here, ideas are born and visions of the future take shape.
