About the place
Beyond Giruliai, in the village of Kukuliškiai, hidden among pines and dunes, lies one of the most impressive traces of the Second World War in the Klaipėda region – the “Memel-Nord” coastal artillery battery. It is the only coastal defence system completed during the Second World War, built after Germany annexed the Klaipėda Region in 1939. The second battery, “Memel-Süd”, remained only on the drawing board. The massive silhouettes of concrete bunkers, thick walls and the wind quietly whistling through periscope openings tell of a time when the sea had to be defended from more than waves.
Today, it is no longer a military installation but a living open-air museum with an interactive exhibition that can be visited with a guide or independently. It is a journey through time that invites you to touch history. Visitors can enter authentic bunker spaces, see how wartime engineering worked and, for a moment, find themselves in an era when Baltic waves washed against a front line.
This is a place where the shadows of the past encourage appreciation of every moment of peace.
Visitors are welcome daily from 12:00 to 20:00, but it is advisable to call ahead before arriving.
