About the place
In Klaipėda, the memory of the city’s old quarters and streets is being brought to life: the former Vitė suburb has been recreated in bronze in Ferdinando Square (sculptor G. Jonkus). The model shows the quarter as it looked in the early 20th century, with street names and key landmarks indicated. Surviving topographical material, city plans, old residents’ address books, photographs of buildings and written sources were used to create it.
At the beginning of Liepų Street, another model (sculptor A. Sakalauskas) reconstructs buildings that once stood on Liepų, formerly considered the city’s most elegant street – the Neo-Gothic Royal Post Office, telegraph office, bank, governor’s residence, merchants’ houses and more. Models of Klaipėda’s historic Old Town development up to the mid-20th century can also be seen at Jono Kalnelis and in the square beside the sailing ship “Meridianas”.
