About the place

As early as the 16th century, the Danė waterfront was lined with warehouses, as shown in the oldest known view of the city dating from 1535. By the beginning of the 17th century, masonry houses and warehouses already stood on Žvejų Street. In the first half of the 20th century, the warehouse at Žvejų St. 12 was known as “Germania-Speicher” (Germania Warehouse), while the nearby building at Žvejų St. 8 was called “Dange-Speicher” (Danė Warehouse). Because of their architectural similarity, townspeople nicknamed them the “Two Brothers”. The imaginative names given to Klaipėda’s warehouses reflect the city’s wish to give meaning even to practical architecture. In the 18th–19th centuries, warehouses known as “Hermes”, “Leopard”, “Three Roofs”, “The Great”, “Charles”, “The Green” and others operated here. The surviving buildings are like capsules of memory, preserving traces of flourishing trade and telling the story of how the port shaped the face of the city. They remind us that even functional structures can become witnesses to history in a city where life was already bustling and Klaipėda’s distinctive, energetic and open spirit was pulsing.
