About the place
It is not only an open-air gallery of modern Lithuanian sculpture, but also one of the most sensitive layers of Klaipėda’s historical memory. Since 1977, 116 sculptures created by 67 Lithuanian artists have been exhibited in this 12-hectare park.
However, this site once served as the city’s central cemetery, operating here from 1820 onwards. Today, the park contains a memorial to those buried here until 1944, as well as the graves of the insurgents and those who died during the incorporation of Klaipėda into Lithuania. One of the more interesting highlights is the 1925 obelisk: an authentic demarcation post that once marked the boundary between Lithuania Minor and Lithuania Major.
During your visit, discover the grave of J. L. Vyneris, the memorial to the 1923 uprising, places of remembrance related to the Second World War, and the monument commemorating those who never returned from the sea.
This is a space where history, art and recreation merge into one meditative narrative in the shelter of nature. Here, time seems to stand still – every path leads not only through the park, but also through the memory of the city.
