About the place
Located in the heart of Klaipėda, Theatre Square is a lively setting for meetings, celebrations and culture, attracting both residents and visitors. Concerts, events, the Sea Festival and many other occasions take place here.
The history of the square began in 1819, when part of the castle moat was filled in and the New Market opened. The area was occupied by butchers’ stalls, and a market hall was built in 1860. The Fish Market operated nearby, where fishermen brought their catch across the lagoon and sold it directly from boats decorated with colourful weather vanes.
At the beginning of the 20th century, the square merged with Turgaus Street into a single trading area bustling with carts, stalls and amusements. When space ran out, commerce even spilled into Sukilėlių Street.
Although the square itself was laid out only in the 19th century, the spirit of theatre has been present here since the 17th century, when travelling actors invited townspeople to open-air performances. Today it remains one of the city’s liveliest places, full of activity, stories and a sense of community.
