WALKING WOMAN. A. Šnaras. 1986

About the place

Passer-by:

– You look strangely twisted, taking a step forward yet hesitating, turning back, looking around, wanting to escape. You are trying to work out where everyone else is going. But you do not want to go with them. You hesitate.

Sculpture:

– At first, when I was installed, I was not in this flower bed. I stood beside the path. I would like to stand there again. I was not created to be admired, not to be a flower among flowers – I was created to leave. I take a step forward, but in truth I am going backward. Perhaps my title should not be “Walking Woman”, but “Woman Leaving”.

– Stone is alive, not because I decided it is. It simply is alive.

– Working with stone stretches through time, and that shapes the movement of my consciousness. Stone heals.

– My path is from the small to the large. That is how I create best.

– What is most important in life? To understand the miracle of the moment when you open your eyes.

– Myth is carved in stone, while truth is found in a grain of sand. People create myths because they are powerful, but the miracle lies in the grain of sand.

Passer-by:

– I imagine that in ancient times a bearded philosopher resembling sculptor Antanas Šnaras would have spoken like this to students sitting around him.
